As long as I can remember I knew I wanted to be an artist. My passion began with drawing and painting. I have always been in awe of those who were able to turn a blank page or canvas into something reflecting life. Then one day my Japanese grandmother started making clothes for me, “her porcelain doll.” I watched wide-eyed as she took measurements, cut and then sewed many outfits for me. She was the first to show me how to alter a pattern. I knew then what type of artist I wanted to be.
Being able to attend the Academy of Art University has enabled me to pursue a career path that has the power to challenge and create innovative ideas through the art of fashion and design. This led to the ultimate reward - the acceptance into the AAU' s Graduation Fashion Show.
I have poured my heart and soul into my collection and feel it is the best representation of me at this time in my life. My collection is inspired by the work and embodiment of the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. I particularly gravitated towards Dali’s, Galatea of the Spheres painting, which inspired the idea to create illusions with polka dots, rounded shapes, asymmetrical silhouettes, and hand made and hand embroidered pom poms. My goal was to interpret Dali’s dream like world seen in his art, along with his surrealistic way of life.I combined every skill I learned over the past four years and found that I learned something new everyday in the collections development process. I hope to continue to grow and learn as much as possible as a designer as I begin my journey in New York.
